A. Expressing Existence: あります and います

1. あります (arimasu) is used to express the existence of inanimate objects, plants, or places.

   Structure:

   • [Place] に [Object] が あります。

   Example:

   • つくえの うえに ほんが あります。 (Tsukue no ue ni hon ga arimasu.) – There is a book on the desk.

2. います (imasu) is used for living beings like people and animals.

   Structure:

   • [Place] に [Person/Animal] が います。

   Example:

   • にわに いぬが います。 (Niwa ni inu ga imasu.) – There is a dog in the garden.

B. Asking About Location

To ask where something is, use どこに (doko ni) to ask for the location of a thing, person, or place.

1. どこに [Object] が ありますか。 (Doko ni [Object] ga arimasu ka?) – Where is [Object]?

   Example:

   • ほんは どこに ありますか。 (Hon wa doko ni arimasu ka?) – Where is the book?

2. どこに [Person/Animal] が いますか。 (Doko ni [Person/Animal] ga imasu ka?) – Where is [Person/Animal]?

   Example:

   • せんせいは どこに いますか。 (Sensei wa doko ni imasu ka?) – Where is the teacher?

C. Describing Location Using Positional Words

1. [Object] の [Position] に [Subject] が あります/います。

   Example:

   • いすの したに ねこが います。 (Isu no shita ni neko ga imasu.) – The cat is under the chair.
   • テレビの まえに テーブルが あります。 (Terebi no mae ni tēburu ga arimasu.) – There is a table in front of the TV.

Common positional words:

• うえ (ue) – on, above
• した (shita) – under, below
• まえ (mae) – in front of
• うしろ (ushiro) – behind
• みぎ (migi) – right
• ひだり (hidari) – left
• なか (naka) – inside
• そと (soto) – outside
• となり (tonari) – next to

D. Expressing "Between" with あいだ

When describing that something is between two objects, use A と B の あいだ (A to B no aida).

1. [Object A] と [Object B] の あいだに [Object] が あります/います。

   Example:

   • ぎんこうと ほんやの あいだに カフェが あります。 (Ginkō to honya no aida ni kafe ga arimasu.) – There is a café between the bank and the bookstore.

1. いすの うえに ほんが あります。 (Isu no ue ni hon ga arimasu.) – There is a book on the chair.
2. ほんやは きっさてんの となりに あります。 (Honya wa kissaten no tonari ni arimasu.) – The bookstore is next to the café.
3. こうえんに いぬが います。 (Kōen ni inu ga imasu.) – There is a dog in the park.
4. わたしの いえは スーパーの ちかくに あります。 (Watashi no ie wa sūpā no chikaku ni arimasu.) – My house is near the supermarket.

4. Practice Sentences

• テレビの うしろに ねこが います。 (Terebi no ushiro ni neko ga imasu.) – There is a cat behind the TV.
• スーパーは どこに ありますか。 (Sūpā wa doko ni arimasu ka?) – Where is the supermarket?
• いすの したに えんぴつが あります。 (Isu no shita ni enpitsu ga arimasu.) – There is a pencil under the chair.
